2005 Day Break Block Merlot

Napa Reserve Mee Merlot
VINEYARD INFORMATION
Over the past decade southern Napa has emerged as the place for Merlot in California. Consistently this region coaxes more depth from this variety than anywhere else in the state. Our “Day Break” Reserve Merlot comes from a sloping, five-acre block facing the rising sun at our Vista Montone Vineyard in southern Napa. In addition to the dazzling views of San Pablo Bay, it has the cool marine climate that Merlot enjoys so much.

WINEMAKING
For Merlot, we incorporate extensive seed removal into the cap management process as well as oxidative rackings during the barrel aging period. This allows the tannins to polymerize more fully creating larger, softer tannins out of smaller, more aggressive and angular ones. It also helps release the aromatic berry character inherent in the grapes.

WINEMAKER NOTES
One of the most impressive traits of Merlot from our “Day Break” vineyard in southern Napa Valley is the color –the wine is consistently opaque. In addition to its ebony tint this 2005 has a generous nose packed with plums, cassis, spice, blackberries, vanilla and leather. The structure, as one might expect from a cool maritime site is firm and balanced. The finish is long and complete. It drinks beautifully now but should continue to improve over the next few years.

CHEF'S NOTES
Our Day Break Merlot is a great accompaniment to any red meat dish. Our chefs often pair its rich character with seared lamb loin with roasted fingerling potatoes and a blackberry, cassis reduction.
